Ground Control Touring Takes Over Late Night!

Posted 12/16/2011

Late night television was at its best this week (in our opinion!) If you were channel surfing in the hours before midnight, we hope you tuned in and witnessed the GCT takeover. We are excited to have had 3 of our artists perform on late night TV in one week…consecutively!

Tuesday Dec. 13th – Wild Flag kicked things off with “Romance” on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Wednesday Dec. 14th – Deer Tick kept the party going with “Funny Word” on Conan.

Thursday Dec. 15th – Dawes brought things home on Conan with a powerful performance of “Time Spent in Los Angeles.”

If all of the live music above wasn’t enough, earlier this week David Letterman attended a Jason Isbell show in Birmingham and raved, “It was a great two hours of music; Jason Isbell and his band — unbelievable.”

Read more about the Birmingham show here.

Ground Control Touring Artists Play at San Francisco’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival

Bright Eyes, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Justin Townes Earle, Kurt Vile & The Violators, M. Ward, Woods, Thurston Moore, and The Felice Brothers took the stage at this year’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. The free festival spanned from September 30th through October 2nd on six stages at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park.

SF Weekly spoke highly of Justin Townes Earle’s Saturday afternoon set, especially his solo acoustic performance that included a cover of Lightnin’ Hopkins’ “My Starter Won’t Start.” For the final song, Justin’s father Steve Earle lent a hand on “Harlem River Blues.”

Thurston Moore delivered a set that Joshua Zucker of The San Francisco Chronicle described as a “deliciously electic set of songs,” and that although this was an acoustic band, “Moore has not lost any of the bluster or reduced his expressive range.” Moore was joined by a six-piece band that included violin and a full size harp in which he noted was his first ever bluegrass festival appearance.

Mercury News reported that Conor Oberst curated a stage line-up, a job usually reserved for T.Bone Burnett, which included M. Ward, Kurt Vile & the Violators, Simon Joyner, Woods, Jonathan Wilson, the Felice Brothers as well as his own band, Bright Eyes

She & Him bring Christmas early with the release of ‘A Very She & Him Christmas’ on October 25th

Posted 09/09/2011

A Very She & Him Christmas is a new collection of holiday tunes from two of music’s most impressive artists—Zooey Deschanel (She) & M. Ward (Him). Inspired by seminal holiday albums from the likes of The Carpenters, Vince Guaraldi, The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley and more, She & Him have set out to create an intimate holiday recording of Christmas classics that helps bring new emotions out of old songs. Deschanel and Ward let the songs speak for themselves, oftentimes recording them with just acoustic guitar and vocals. Deschanel’s soulful vocal delivery and Ward’s impressive guitar work, both sounding as timeless as ever. If you can’t wait until next month check out the duo with Conan O’Brian as they sing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”

M. Ward, The Felice Brothers, Justin Townes Earle and Middle Brother took to the stage at the Newport Folk Festival held on July 30th and 31st at Fort Adams State Park.

NPR is currently streaming the in-concert sets of The Felice Brothers, who performed on Saturday, and Middle Brother and Justin Townes Earle, who performed on Sunday.

The Providence Journal covered the festival, praising M. Ward’s “understated poetics and easy-going delivery” and briefly revealing that Dawes served as Ward’s backing band for a number of songs. David Klepper of the Associated Press interviewed Ward for an article on the festival, now in its 52nd year.

In addition to these two music-filled days, Deer Tick’s John McCauley, of Providence, teamed up with The Low Anthem’s Ben Knox Miller on Saturday night for the First Annual Newport Folk Backstage Benefit BBQ. Deer Tick also performed for three nights at the Newport Blues Café, featuring guest set appearances by The Felice Brothers, Middle Brother, Jonny Corndawg, Dawes, M. Ward and more. All proceeds went to charity.

Ground Control Touring Artists Play Bonnaroo 2011

Posted 06/13/2011

A handful of Ground Control Touring’s artists played at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, TN this past weekend.

Wavves kicked off the fest with a “hard-charging set,” according to Rolling Stone Magazine. The set was said to be “full of power chord fury and sunny melodies.” Full article here.

Justin Townes Earle and Deer Tick were both listed in SPIN Magazine’s “5 Best Sets of Bonnaroo 2011: Day 2.” Justin Townes Earle received much praise, and was said to be “as artfully and bluntly honest as any singer-songwriter type you’ll ever encounter,” while Deer Tick’s set as Nirvana cover band, Deervana, was a “real treat for young concertgoers.” Read more here.

Deer Tick played their set on Sunday and met up with Rolling Stone for a video interview. The band discusses the previous night’s set and their upcoming album. Read up on Deer Tick here.

Man Man and Cory Chisel are included in Vh1’s “Top 10 Bonnaroo Acts With The Fastest Growing Fan Bases.” More here.

“We’re big fans of Celebration, Florida, the startlingly strange left-turn from New York folkies The Felice Brothers, so we’re happy to unveil the premiere of the video for ‘Ponzi,’ a slippery ode about Wall Street deception and other nefarious dealings. While the video edit excises a snippet of dialogue sampled from Stanley Donen’s great ’60s romantic thriller Charade, this video definitely has some retro, artsy stylishness. Enjoy!” – From the A.V. Record Store Day 2011

Record Store Day 2011

Posted 04/15/2011

Ground Control Touring artists will be participating in this year’s Record Store Day, which takes place on April 16th.

Sonic Youth will be re-issuing 6,000 copies of their Whores Moaning EP, which was originally exclusively released in Australia in 1993 to coincide with tour dates in Australia and New Zealand. The album features an original drawing on the back cover by Kurt Cobain.

Dom will be releasing 1,000 3-sided 10” singles, which will be exclusively available at participating Record Store Day stores. To celebrate this release, the band will be performing a set at Boston’s Newbury Comics at 1pm.

Wavves and Trash Talk are releasing a split 7” (limited to 500 copies).

Supporting their concert on April 17th at The Earl, British Sea Power will be performing an intimate in-store set at Criminal Records in Atlanta, Georgia. They will also be releasing a UK-only 7” entitled “Living Is So Easy.” Criminal Records will be the only U.S. store to have it, so stop by if you can!

Widowspeak will be playing an in-store at Cake Shop in New York City at 9:20pm, with bands such as Eternal Summers and Natural Child.

In addition to these releases and performances, Fucked Up has decided to repurpose 15 long lost extra tracks as a fictitious compilation album from a British town circa 1978-83. The town is the one in which their new album, the rock opera David Comes To Life, is set. All tracks are unreleased, and will not be on the new Fucked Up album (which is out on May 24th!)

For more information on these and other Record Store Day happenings, visit http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home

Kurt Vile’s “Jesus Fever” video premieres on MTV Hive

Posted 04/04/2011

“You can take Kurt Vile out of Philadelphia, but as the video for Jesus Fever leads us to believe — you can’t take the Philly out of Kurt. As music fans become more aware of Vile’s subtle, yet masterful guitar work via his acclaimed fourth LP Smoke Ring For My Halo, the song “Jesus Fever” stands out as one of the more poignant moments of the record. His voice is tender yet firm as he narrates the inner monologue of someone who’s wandering, and in this video, Vile’s long hair and nomadic spirit translates to what an apparition of “Jesus Fever” would look like.” —From MTVHive
