Michael Rother presents the music of NEU! and Harmonia plus selected solo works
For many fans, musicians and critics alike the guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Michael Rother is a key figure of the innovative music scene originating from Germany in the early 1970s. His music has been inspirational for generations of musicians - from David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, DEVO, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, U2, Autechre, Radiohead, Primal Scream, and beyond. Michael Rother was a member of Kraftwerk in 1971 and formed the legendary bands NEU! (with Klaus Dinger) and Harmonia (with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius of Cluster) before releasing nine solo albums.
Since the official re-release of the NEU! albums in 2001 Rother has played live in many countries around the world and collaborated with numerous musicians and bands: John Frusciante, Secret Machines, Benjamin Curtis (School of Seven Bells), Josh Klinghoffer, Red Hot Chili Peppers and FM Einheit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius (Cluster, Harmonia), Hans Lampe (La Düsseldorf), Mick Harvey (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) and the Melbourne based band Beaches - to name only a few.
In 2010 Michael Rother formed the live project Hallogallo 2010 with Steve Shelley (drums, Sonic Youth) and Aaron Mullan (bass, Tall Firs). Together they toured in Europe, Mexico, South America and the USA and played numerous acclaimed concerts - e.g. at ATP festivals in the UK, Spain and in Monticello, New York.
In 2011 Michael Rother collaborated with the NYC-based Japanese artist Noritoshi Hirakawa at YCAM in Yamaguchi, Japan, and created the music for Hirakawa ́s video installation “Beyond The Sunbeam Through Trees” which features the Japanese dancer Yoko Ando (The Forsythe Company).
In 2012 and 2013 Michael Rother wrote and recorded film scores for the feature films Houston which saw its international world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013, and Die Räuber-Les Brigands which will be released in 2014. Rother also made live appearances in many European countries as well as in Russia and Japan, occasionally accompanied by the young Berlin-based Krautrock band Camera.
The lineup for Michael Rother’s live performances in 2014 features a pool of international musicans, including Hans Lampe (drums/La Düsseldorf), Aaron Mullan (bass/Tall Firs), Anika (vocals) and Franz Bargmann (guitar/Camera). Michael Rother will present the endless fast-forward type of music of NEU! as well as tracks by Harmonia and from his catalogue of solo works.
