Hometown: Brooklyn NY US Department of Eagles is Daniel Rossen and Fred Nicolaus. The two met in 2000 when New York University randomly assigned them a room together. They began making music shortly thereafter, starting with a collection of odd sample-based pastiches written using a pirated waveform editor. Essentially a joke, it was occasionally mistaken for abstract West Coast hip-hop and a small California label released a couple of 7" singles. Soon, Daniel and Fred began writing more concise, song-oriented material and recording in a studio. The results of this period were combined with the sample pastiches to form Department of Eagles' hodgepodge first album. In 2004 Daniel joined the group Grizzly Bear, playing guitar, singing, and writing a good portion of their sophomore album, Yellow House. Also, touring. Too much of it. Fred descended deeper into the square existence, holding down a number of jobs and opening a savings account. Throughout all of this the two continued writing together whenever possible, resulting in a new batch of songs that they are currently recording with Daniel's Grizzly Bear bandmates, Chris Taylor and Chris Bear. A new album will be released later this year. Daniel writes songs, sings, and plays a variety of instruments. Originally from Southern California, he now lives in Northern Brooklyn.
