Hometown: San Francisco, CA US Don’t let the name scare you; Birdmonster doesn’t bite. Quite the opposite—the San Francisco quartet weaves beautiful melodies and harmonies into intimately inviting songs that feel familiar upon first listen, and yet still fresh after the hundredth. The foursome is a diverse bunch, drawing from a wide array of individual influences. As is typically the case, the resulting product is much more compelling and fresh than if each member came from a similar musical background.Guitarist David Klein and bassist Justin Tenuto, childhood friends from San Diego, spent their youth jamming out to heavy metal together. When the pair moved up the coast to Santa Barbara, they met future Birdmonster drummer Zach Winter and together the trio headed still farther north to San Francisco. It was there that they met Peter Arcuni, a recent transplant himself from Rhode Island, and almost spontaneously, Birdmonster was formed. For the first several years of their career, Birdmonster maintained a decidedly D.I.Y. approach, recording and releasing their eponymous EP as well as their debut full-length, 2006’s No Midnight, independently. No Midnight was subsequently re-released by the now defunct spinART Records and Birdmonster went on the road with UK indie rockers Art Brut, also sharing the stage with Tapes n Tapes, Cold War Kids, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and The National, and steadily and persistently building up a buzz and a following that has led to a deal with The FADER Label, the recording branch of The FADER. The FADER Label will release Birdmonster’s sophomore LP, From the Mountain to the Sea, digitally on August 5th 2008. The physical record hits stores a month later, on September 2nd. From the Mountain to the Sea defies the ‘sophomore slump, and is in fact a profound leap forward for the band with a sound that is more mature and more developed. “We spent some time writing these songs in a desert cabin,” explains Arcuni. “I think that steered us towards more intimate songs—songs that can be adapted for loud rock shows or more intimate acoustic shows equally well.” Thanks in part to the expert knob tweaking of Tom Schick (Ryan Adams, Rufus Wainwright, Norah Jones) and in part to Birdmonster’s evolution over the years from a group of musicians into a cohesive unit in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, Birdmonster is poised to ride From the Mountain to the Sea all the way to the sky’s limit. "Making From The Mountain To The Sea was a really great process. For the most part it was a live recording. I really wanted to capture the raw energy of the band.,” Schick explains. “One thing thing that made the record so fun was the complete freedom that FADER gave us in the studio. It created an extremely comfortable environment which allowed us to make what I think is a classic and timeless record. I hope people have as much fun listening to it as we had making it.” |
